Kathmandu, September 14
The non-establishment faction of the Nepali Congress has decided to move forward with the party’s 15th general convention process in its own way. This was concluded at a meeting of the faction held Monday at outgoing party president Sher Bahadur Deuba’s residence in Maharajgunj, where members determined they could not take part in the convention on the terms decided by the party’s central office.
Earlier, the establishment side’s Central Working Committee had decided to allow all central members from the 14th general convention to take part in the 15th convention in the same capacity.
The non-establishment faction, however, said it was proceeding not for any position but as part of an effort to save the party, and has decided to move forward with the 15th convention schedule previously presented by Umakant Chaudhary.
After the meeting, leader Dr Prakash Sharan Mahat said informal discussions had taken place regarding the establishment side’s decision, and that a formal position would be set out at a press conference at 4 pm on Monday.
The Congress Working Committee meeting had earlier decided to welcome and assign responsibility, in the same capacity as central members, to any 14th-convention-elected central members wishing to take part in or serve as organisers of the 15th convention.
