The weeklong standing committee meeting of the ruling Nepal Communist Party has been over on Sunday. The meeting had begun on Sunday last week.

The meeting decided to call a central committee meeting on January 8, 2020, according to a leader. As the party held its standing committee meeting after several months last week, it has already been months since the central committee met last.

The meeting endorsed the political report presented by two chairmen–KP Sharma Oli and Pushpa Kamal Dahal with some amendments and suggestions. However, it decided to forward the party charter amendment proposal tabled by general secretary Bishnu Paudel to the central committee for further discussion, according to standing committee member Bhim Rawal.

‘US has to prove Indo-Pacific Strategy and MCC are different’

Meanwhile, the meeting also decided to urge the government to hold talks with the United States government about the Millennium Challenge Corporation grant agreement signed with Nepal in 2017. The meeting said the government should accept the grant only after the US proved it was not a part of the controversial Indo-Pacific Strategy.

Earlier, some leaders of the party had strongly advocated against the deal. The agreement’s implementation is pending as Parliament has not yet endorsed the document.
