Kathmandu, June 9

The secretariat meeting of the ruling Nepal Communist Party has been postponed indefinitely.

Earlier, two chairpersons of the party–KP Sharma Oli and Pushpa Kamal Dahal–had called the meeting for this afternoon. The meeting was supposed to discuss the controversial Millennium Challenge Corporation deal signed between the governments of Nepal and the United States in 2017.

However, the meeting was put off at the last hour as the leaders were busy in parliamentary affairs, informs the party’s general secretary Bishnu Paudel. According to him, the two chairpersons will fix the new date for the meeting soon.

The three-year-old deal has not been implemented yet as the Federal Parliament has not endorsed it. The ruling party is dived over the issue. Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli wants to endorse it as soon as possible, but he is reportedly thinking of not putting pressure for its endorsement. Many others in the party have urged for a revision before the endorsement citing some of the provisions are against national interest.

Meanwhile, a task force formed by the party has also suggested that the deal should not be endorsed without revision. The report of the task force has not been officially discussed in the party.
