NCP postpones key meeting over school dept leadership row

L-R: Narayan Kaji Shrestha and Ishwar Pokharel

Kathmandu, July 23

The ruling Nepal Communist Party has postponed its secretariat meeting called for Tuesday afternoon after two leaders belonging to different factions remained adamant that they should be given an opportunity to lead the party’s school department.

It is not certain when the next meeting will take place.

Two secretariat members–Narayan Kaji Shrestha and Ishwar Pokharel–have been demanding the position.

Shrestha belongs to the Maoist faction led by chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal and all leaders of the former Maoist party have agreed on his name. However, most leaders of the former UML party want Pokharel to lead the department.

There is a group within the former UML faction that wants to keep Pokharel away from the position.

Meanwhile, Pokharel left the capital for Province 1 on Tuesday to take part in various events. However, he has already told party chairman KP Sharma Oli that he would not withdraw from the demand, according to sources.
