NCP leaders agree on shares of UML, Maoist sides in departmental leadership

Kathmandu, July 17

One year and two months after the announcement of the merger of CPN-UML and CPN-Maoist Centre to form the Nepal Communist Party, the leaders have claimed that they forged an agreement to divide leadership positions of party departments.

Among 32 departments in the party’s central structures, the UML side will lead 18 whereas the Maoist side will lead the rest. Of ‘big’ departments, the UML side will lead organisation, foreign affairs, parliamentary and state affairs departments. Likewise, the Maoist side will lead publicity and finance departments among others.

Now, the two groups will select leaders for the departments they have got.

However, insiders say a few issues are yet to be finalised over the issue. Two chairmen–KP Sharma Oli and Pushpa Kamal Dahal–will discuss them with the party’s influential senior leader Madhav Kumar Nepal and make a final decision, according to them.

The two chairmen will consult Nepal to select some district incharges also.

Earlier on Tuesday evening, Oli, Dahal, secretariat members Bishnu Paudel and Ram Bahadur Thapa had held a discussion at the Prime Minister’s residence in Baluwatar. After the meeting, they had claimed everything got settled now.

The party’s general secretary Bishnu Paudel says the party’s secretariat meeting scheduled for next Sunday will formally wrap up the unification process.
