Tourism Minister’s secretariat denounces Nepalgunj incident, Shahi arrested

Tourism Minister’s secretariat has condemned the ‘misbehaviour’ directed towards Minister Yogesh Bhattarai at Nepalgunj airport on Saturday.

Pro-monarchy activist Gyanendra Shahi and his group misbehaved with Minister Bhattarai both outside and inside the plane for holding up the aircraft for nearly an hour. Minister Bhattarai called the incident a personal attack rather than a political one.

On the other hand, Shahi has been taken into custody. Police in Lalitpur district said they ‘rescued’ the controversial activist after NCP cadres attacked him at a press meet on Sunday. However, later on Sunday, police issued an arrest warrant against Shahi mentioning that he showed bad behaviour towards a minister.

NCP not at fault, cadres might have acted out on their own, says Home Minister on Banke incident

Home Minister Ram Bahadur Thapa has said that the Banke incident in which a Nepali Congress leader was beaten up didn’t happen upon instructions from the ruling party. He, however, did add that some NCP cadres might have acted on their own.

Speaking at the House of Representatives on Sunday, Thapa said this incident wasn’t political and that whoever was held responsible would be punished. He said that the government was serious about such incidents and that investigation was ongoing after police arrested three people for attacked Nepali Congress Banke president Kiran Koirala.

Prince Dahal creates history by winning gold

Young Nepali shuttler Prince Dahal has won a gold medal at the Junior International Badminton Series in Dubai. Dahal beat favourite and ninth-seed Barun Kapoor from India 21-19, 21-19 in the finals of the U-19 event. Dahal, last year, had won a silver medal at the U-15 championships.

SC agrees to revoke Nepal Satellite Telecom Company’s license

The Supreme Court (SC) has paved the way for the implementation of the Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA) decision to revoke the license of Nepal Satellite Telecom owned by Ajeya Raj Sumargi.

The NTA on August 19 had revoked the license of Sumargi’s company. The NTA before that had given the company a final deadline of mid-June to pay the amount. The NTA had then extended the deadline till August 18 and decided that the company’s license would be revoked if the amount were not paid even by then.

Sumargi had moved to the SC instead of exercising the option of appealing with the government within 35 days of revocation of the license. The SC has refused to issue the interim order as demanded by Sumargi pointing that the company had dallied instead of paying the amount determined by the NTA.

SC paves way for medical education entrance exam

Supreme Court has opened the door for the Institute of Medicine to conduct this year’s MBBS entrance examinations. IOM had postponed the entrance exam due to be held on September 7 after the SC gave an interim order to do so.

But, a joint bench of justices Ishwar Prasad Khatiwada and Manoj Kumar Sharma have annulled the interim order and paving way for the exams to now be held. The bench stated that in interim order was annulled as it would affect the academic session. A writ was filed at the SC asking for the cancellation of the entrance examinations.

Labourers and suppliers to end protest around Melamchi project

A protest by labourers and suppliers hired by Italian contractors CMC has ended after talks with the Melamchi Drinking Water Supply Board and the Ministry of Water Supply and Sanitation.

Agitating labourers and suppliers have been staging a protest around the main construction site of the project, demanding payment from the expelled contractor for their works and goods. The government has said that it will reimburse them with the amount in the coming months.

Nepalis now permitted to work in Malaysia for zero cost

The Ministry of Labour, Employment and Social Security has clarified Nepalis have started to receive labour permit to go work in Malaysia.

A joint task force comprising representatives from both the countries held a meeting on September 10-11 in Malaysia to finalise the technical backlogs following the signing of the pact. According to the ministry, a conclusion was drawn to formally take ahead the implementation of the MoU keeping discussion on remaining issues related to labour pact.

According to the MoU on zero cost and social security guarantee, the Nepali workers do not need to pay a service charge, round trip airfare, visa fee, medical examination cost and security screening cost.
