Former Maoists to Oli: We let you choose prime minister, won’t let you choose speaker

Members of the former Maoist party and the UML remain divided over the party’s candidate for the post of Speaker of the House of Representatives. Although the winter session of parliament began on December 20, lawmakers have failed to choose a successor for Krishna Bahadur Mahara, who stepped down amid allegations of sexual misconduct. According to sources, it’s not just Prime Minister Oli and chairman Dahal who are at odds of the issue, President Bidya Devi Bhandari also has a candidate for the post. While Dahal is under pressure from his former comrades to name one of them for the post, Oli backs former speaker Subas Nembang and Bhandari supports Deputy Speaker Shiva Maya Tumbahamphe for the job.

Convict in Sudan scam released

The Supreme Court has ordered police to release the main convict in the Sudan scam case to allow him to file an appeal against his conviction. Shambhu Bharati, whose company supplied sub-standard armoured vehicles to Nepal Police for its peace-keeping operations in Sudan, was arrested four months ago by CIB team. The Supreme Court had earlier sentenced him to one year in prison and ordered him to pay compensation and fine of Rs 140 million.

45 candidates file nomination for National Assembly 

A total of 45 candidates from six political parties have filed their nomination for the National Assembly at offices set up in seven different provinces by the Election Commission. According to the commission, leaders from the Nepali Congress, Rastriya Janta Party, Samajwadi Party, Janamorch and Nepal Majdoor Kishan Party have filed nominations for the January 23 elections.

Rape-accused Siddhababa discharged from hospital

Krishna Bahadur Giri, aka Siddhababa, who has been accused of raping one of his followers, has been discharged from a hospital in Biratnagar, where was admitted to following complaints of chest pain. Giri was recently released on bail by the Morang District Court.

British Council under investigation for tax evasion

The British Council in Nepal is being investigated in a tax evasion case, authorities say. The Department of Inland Revenue recently wrote to the British Council saying that it was under investigation for tax evasion as it was not registered in Nepal. The department says that millions of rupees collected by the British Council from students taking Cambridge and IELTS exams have not been accounted for.

Parliament’s Women and Social Affairs Committee has approved a bill that makes local governments responsible for the welfare of destitute senior citizens. A meeting of the committee approved the bill to ensure that senior citizens who don’t have anyone to look after them are taken care of.

Nepali singer to perform in Assam

Nepali singer Pramod Kharel is set to perform at an event in Assam, India, a state which has been in distress following the enactment of the Citizenship Amendment Act. Kharel will perform at a programme in Assam on January 7.
