Local and provincial govts accuse centre of taking all power

Provincial governments are not happy with the bill being tabled at the National Assembly by the Legislation Committee. The provincial governments are stating that the centre is trying to control the local and provincial levels.

The committee members who had met various provincial and local government officials said that they felt that the government was bringing out new mechanisms which were not in the constitution. The leaders of the provincial level said that they felt that the centre was trying to take all the power while there were talks of decentralising the power. The leaders have also shown concerns about how the centre was giving the district coordination committees more power than the local units. Some officials have threatened the centre that they will go to court if the centre does things against the constitution.

Officials at PU refuse to accept files

Officials of the Purbanchal University have refused to look at files of potential professors interviewed by the university’s service commission. The president of the service commission, Badrinath Shrestha, had interviewed various people for the post of professors and assistant professors three days before his retirement. The interview had taken place at a hotel in Kathmandu. Officials working at the central office of the university refused to accept the file which has now been taken to the Morang District Police Office for security reasons.

Advertising bill approved by HoR

The advertising bill which was approved by National Assembly has also been approved by the House of Representative on Thursday. The bill has a provision, which will make it mandatory for tv operators to implement the clean feed policy by the next fiscal year. Any new channel being registered in Nepal will have to follow the clean feed protocol. The bill will become an act after it is endorsed by President Bidya Devi Bhandari.

Janakpur locals staging protest against cop who beat up young boy

Locals of Janakpur protested after a young boy who sold coconut for a living was beaten up by the police. Earlier, 16-year-old Roshan Chaudhary was beaten up by Tourist Police staffer Prem Shankar Yadav on Thursday. Chaudhary says that he was beaten up after he did not give money to Yadav. Yadav also misbehaved with Sushil Karna who was shooting a video of Chaudhary being beaten up by the police. The locals burned tyres and obstructed the road in front of District Police Office, Dhanusha demanding action against Yadav.

Govt alone cannot eradicate dengue: Health Minister

Health Minister Upendra Yadav has said that efforts from the Health Ministry were not enough to control the dengue outbreak in the country. Speaking at an event at the ministry on Thursday, he said everyone needed to do their part to control the dengue outbreak. That said, he did add that the government would do its best to make sure there was no problem with the treatment.

Nepali workers on strike in UAE

Sixty-nine Nepal workers in the UAE have been on strike for the past three months due to negligence of their employer, Advance Management Service.

The workers have not been allowed to return home even after their contract has expired. The workers have said that their visas have not been renewed either. The workers have been regularly asking to go back home, but the company has been stalling them for the past two months. They say that they haven’t been helped by the Nepali Embassy in the UAE either. The workers are also suffering financially.

The embassy in the UAE says that works are being undertaken to send the workers home. The embassy says that the company has said it will address the workers’ concerns and will start the process at the earliest.
