Morang shaman arrested on the charge of assaulting man during ‘healing’

Biratnagar, February 22

Police in the Morang district of eastern Nepal have arrested a shaman on the charge of assaulting a service recipient in the name of healing.

The arrestee has been identified as Krishna Ghatani (25). He and some other shamans had reportedly beaten black and blue Bhim Kaji Gurung (33), a resident of Kanepokhari rural municipality-7 of Morang recently.

Injured in the incident, Gurung underwent treatment at BP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences in Dharan, and is taking rest at home.

Gurung had some mental health problems seven years ago and is taking medicines for the past six years. But, Ghatani assured Gurung that he would heal him, but he assaulted him later.

A video showing the assault has gone viral on social media.

Police Inspector Rishi Raj Dhakal of the Belbari Area Police Post says some other people are also involved in the incident. But, only one has been arrested now as he has been identified. Police have launched a manhunt to nab other suspects.
