At a time when the left alliance is accusing ministers and Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba’s Nepali Congress party of trying to prolong the stay in power, Congress leader and Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Yagya Bahadur Thapa says the new government would not be formed till the third week of February.
“We have fixed the National Assembly polls for February 7. The results will be published within next two days. The Election Commission will take some time to calculate ratio of men and women in the Federal Parliament including the House of Representatives and the Provincial Assembly,” Thapa tells Onlinekhabar in an interview, “Thus, for now, understand that we will go home only after celebrating the Democracy Day on February 19.”
Thapa claims the incumbent government’s stay in power is legitimate as it cannot leave without announcing the final results of recent parliamentary elections and the results cannot be announced without elections of the National Assembly.
“We should let Parliament which will elect the new PM to get its full shape. Yes, the National Assembly does not have any role in the new government formation, but the House of Representatives will not get full shape till the National Assembly polls,” he says, “We are not making any claim, the Election Commission has already clarified the matter.”
