Minister complains of anti-democratic portrayal of govt in media

Minister for Communications and Information Technology, Gokul Banskota, speaks at a function in Kathmandu, on Tuesday, February 5, 2019.

Kathmandu, May 3

Minister for Communications and Information Technology Gokul Baskota has complained that mass media portrayed the incumbent government as anti-democratic just because it is led by a communist party.

Baskota says the projection should be corrected as his Nepal Communist Party is also a democratic party and it has taken part in different democratic movements.

Speaking at a function organised on the occasion of World Press Freedom Day in Kathmandu on Friday, the Minister claimed the government was working towards ensuring a complete press freedom, and it would not involve in any activity affecting the free press.

President of the Federation of Nepali Journalists, the umbrella organisation of Nepali journalists, Govinda Acharya, however, told the Minister at the same function that the free press was still a challenge in the country.

He urged the government to make sure that the government would formulate press freedom-friendly laws.
