The Embassy of Japan in Nepal has honoured the Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA) for its contribution to the successful organisation of the “Manaslu Platinum Jubilee” programme marking 70 years since the first successful ascent of Mt Manaslu.

Japanese Ambassador to Nepal Maeda Toru presented the “Ambassador’s Commendation” to NMA President Phur Gelje Sherpa at a ceremony.

The honour was awarded in recognition of the NMA’s significant role in organising the platinum jubilee programme, which commemorated the historic first ascent of Mt Manaslu.

Accepting the award, Sherpa said the recognition from the Japanese Embassy was a major achievement for the NMA.

He said the association would continue to contribute to preserving the history of Manaslu mountaineering and strengthening the longstanding mountain-related ties between Nepal and Japan.

The ceremony was attended by NMA office-bearers and members, as well as representatives from the mountaineering and tourism sectors.

Mt Manaslu was first successfully climbed in 1956 by a Japanese expedition led by Toshio Imanishi and Gyalzen Norbu Sherpa.
