Mahato sets 3 preconditions for polls in Madhesh

Kathmandu, May 11

A member of the presidium of the Rastriya Janata Party Nepal, Rajendra Mahato, has set preconditions to hold local level elections in the Madhesh region.

Mahato told journalists during an interaction in Kathmandu that the constitution must be amended, the number of local levels must be increased and cases filed against protesters during the Madhesh agitation should be withdrawn before the second phase of local level elections scheduled for June 14.

“The Parliament meeting has been called for May 18,” Mahato said, “No elections can be held if our demands are not met by then.”

He went on to warn that his party would not let the polls happen in Madhesh if the preconditions were not fulfilled.

Mahato clarified that the party did not take part in the first phase of polls as the government could not amend the constitution as promised.
