Kathmandu, February 5

The former prime minister and senior leader of the ruling Nepal Communist Party, Madhav Kumar Nepal, has demanded that the government demolish the newly constructed Republic Memorial at the Narayanhiti Palace in Kathmandu. He says the memorial should be built somewhere else.

“The memorial should not have been built there, but they have already built it. It is wrong,” he said during a meeting of the International Relations Committee in Parliament on Wednesday, “Now, it has to be demolished.”

The government had spent around Rs 450 million to build the memorial to commemorate various people who contributed to the establishment of the republic. President Bidya Devi Bhandari had inaugurated the memorial on the occasion of the Republic Day last year.
