Kathmandu, August 5

CPN-Maoist Centre leader Krishna Bahadur Mahara is to become deputy prime minister and finance minister in the Prachanda-led government.

Centre Chair Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’, who has become prime minister with support from parties, including the Congress, the Federal Alliance and some small parties, will take the oath of office and secrecy from President Bidhya Bhandari at 3 pm on Thursday.

Prachanda plans to form a small Cabinet, at least in the beginning, comprising three Maoist ministers, in keeping with a decision that the party made at its meeting at party headquarters in Paris Danda on Thursday morning.

The party is yet to finalise other names for ministerial berths, though a source said Mahara is sure to become DPM and finance minister.

At 1 pm, Prime Minister Prachanda will hold consultations with NC President Sher Bahadur Deuba. Leaders said the meeting will finalise the sharing of ministerial portfolios between the Maoist party and the Congress. Only after that will Prachanda select ministers from his party.
