Kathmandu, December 28

A Chinese team commissioned to carry out a detailed feasibility study for the construction of the ambitious Kerung-Kathmandu railway, connecting the capital to the bordering Chinese city, has arrived in Kathmandu.

The team sent by a Chinese governmental body arrived in Kathmandu on Tuesday. Charge d’affaires Wang Xin from the Chinese Embassy in Kathmandu welcomed the team.

Rohit Kumar Bisural, the director general at the Department of Railways, says the team is expected to complete the study and submit its report in the next 42 months.

“As previously agreed, the team will conduct the study at its own expense and we will provide them security and facilitation,” he says, “It means the project will be expedited now.”

The project has been considered a part of the Chinese government’s Belt and Road Initiative.
