Kathmandu spending Rs 7.5 mln next year to illuminate key places

Colourful lights have been illuminated at Maitighar Mandala in Kathmandu in June 2020.

Kathmandu, June 28

The Kathmandu Metropolitan City is launching the Nighttime Urban Beauty Programme, in which the local government will install colourful lights in major hubs of the city.

The programme has already been piloted at Maitighar Mandala. LED colour pipe lights have been installed there.

The city government’s joint-secretary Rajeshwar Gyawali says, “Such programmes are prioritised in different cities of the world to make the nightlife lively. We have also started this.”

Gradually, places on the Unesco World Heritage List and other places of touristic and journalistic importance will be illuminated, Gyawali informs. Whereas the city government will invest in the project for most of the places, private companies will also be asked to contribute as a part of their corporate social responsibility.

The city hopes that the programme will help the nighttime businesses develop.
