Local elections: Supreme Court issues show-cause notice

Republica, Nagarik and Rajdhani have given prominent space to a report on the Supreme Court’s notice to the government,

Republica, in its lead story for the day, says the Supreme Court has issued a show-cause notice to the government and the principal opposition leader to furnish reasons for not holding election for local bodies for inordinately long period.

Responding to a writ petition jointly filed by advocates Chandra Kanta Gyawali, Parashuram Upadhyay, Bimal Gyawali, Leeladhar Upadhyaya and Bijay Gautam, a single bench of Acting Chief Justice Sushila Karki asked the defendants, including the prime minister and the main opposition leader, to furnish reasons within 15 days for not holding local election.

Federal Alliance to protest outside Ratnapark

Naya Patrika in its three-column story below the fold says the Federal Alliance (a group of pro-identity parties, including the Madheshi Morcha) have decided to organise demonstrations in outside Ratna Park on Wednesday. The paper says that the decision comes a day after alliance sympathisers picketed the Prime Minister’s official residence in Baluwatar. The paper say that a mass meeting is going to be organised on Wednesday afternoon, and leaders of 29 political parties are preparing the address the agitators.

Chinese religious leader in town

Annapurna Post, in its lead story, says Chinese Buddhist leader Master Yin arrived in Kathmandu on Tuesday to take part in the international Buddhist conference, scheduled to begin on Thursday. The report says that Yin has played an important role in supporting President Xi’s One Belt One Road plan, and his South China Sea strategy.

Water sources drying up in Sindhupalchowk

Nagarik in its lead story for the day says 691 drinking water projects and over 150 sources of water in the quake-affected district of Sindhupalchowk. The report also takes about the daily hassles locals are facing due to a shortage of drinking water.

Mishandling of bank notes costs govt dear 

Nagarik, in its anchor for the day, says that although the government has been asking the public to handle bank notes carefully, no one is listening. It says that bank notes do not last long in Nepal because the public does not handle them properly. The same report says that it costs the government Rs 390 to print one copy of the  Thousand rupee note, 325 to print a 500 rupee note.
