Kathmandu man commits suicide in police custody

Kathmandu, January 28

A man from Shankhamul of Kathmandu, who was recently arrested on a drug-abuse charge, has committed suicide in police custody, according to police.

Hem Raut tried to kill himself on Sunday morning by hanging inside a toilet of the custody at Metropolitan Police Circle, Naya Baneshwar, according to the circle’s chief Durga Raj Regmi.  The guards saw his attempt and rescued him, but in vain.

“We immediately took him to the Civil Service Hospital and then to the Venus Hospital,” DSP Regmi says, “Yet, we could not save him.” The doctors at Venus declared him dead on Sunday night.

The body has been kept at the Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital for postmortem.

Investigations have revealed that he was arrested multiple times in the past for theft in his neighbourhood.
