Janakpurdham, May 20

Police have arrested former proprietors of Janaki Medical College based in Ramdaiya, Dhanusha, on the charge of cheating students. The arrested are former chair of the college’s board of directors, OP Pandey, and former shareholders Samir Dhungel and Kameshwor Sah. Sah was arrested in Janakpur, whereas Pandey and Dhungel were arrested in Kathmandu, on Wednesday, police said.

Two years ago, medical students studying at the college had lodged a case against the college proprietors, accusing the latter of cheating them. The accused had gone missing after legal proceedings began against them. The proprietors face the charge of selling the college after collecting Rs 25 lakh-Rs 40 lakh from each medical student.

About eight months ago, then board of directors had sold off 87 per cent of the college’s shares to Dhan Bahadur Sherchan, Hariman Lama and Hari Krishna Bhattachan.

Former proprietors OP Pandey, Samir Dhungel, Kameshwor Sah, Bal Ram Gupta, Ashok Sinha and Krishna Dev Yadav were on police’s most wanted list for cheating students and jeopardising their future. Gupta, Sinha and Yadav are still at large.

The three are in the custody of Dhanusha district police office for an investigation. Pointing at a year-long halt in academic activities of the college due to proprietors’ negligence, college students were staging phasewise protests. They had even encircled Singhadurbar, the government secretariat, as part of their movement.
