Kathmandu, September 11
A decisive discussion is set to take place today, under the coordination of the Nepal Army, between President Ram Chandra Paudel and representatives of Gen Z youth regarding the leadership of the interim government.
Since the Gen Z representatives have already decided on the name of former Chief Justice Sushila Karki as the new Prime Minister of the interim government, today’s discussion will give it formal approval.
Army spokesperson Raja Ram Basnet said that President Ram Chandra Paudel and Chief of Army Staff Ashok Raj Sigdel will hold talks with the Gen Z representatives starting Thursday morning. He expressed confidence that the talks would reach a conclusion today.
Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli had resigned following the deaths of 19 youths during protests against corruption and the social media ban. The process of forming an interim government was initiated in line with the demand of those youths for a fresh mandate.
Former Chief Justice Karki, proposed by Gen Z, has also received support from Kathmandu Metropolitan City Mayor Balen Shah. Writing a status on Facebook, Shah announced his support for Karki.
Chief of Army Staff Sigdel had earlier held discussions with representatives of Gen Z youth, Dharan Sub-Metropolitan City Mayor Harka Sampang, Durga Prasai, and others with the aim of listening to all sides.
Harka Sampang has also expressed his support for Sushila Karki. Durga Prasai publicly stated that he would accept whoever leads the government, as long as it provides a way forward for the country.
In the virtual opinion poll expressed by Gen Z youth, Sushila Karki received overwhelming support. Karki herself has already said that she accepts Gen Z’s proposal for her to lead the interim government.
