‘Instead of president’s carpets, govt should have changed quarantine buildings’ locks’

Kathmandu, June 23

Nepali Congress lawmaker Rangamati Shahi has said the government should have changed locks of the buildings used to quarantine people coming to Nepal from India if it had wanted to avoid any cases of quarantine rape.

Referring to a recent case in Kailali of far-western Nepal, Shahi lamented the government, instead, got indulged in changing carpets at the President’s Office during this critical time.

Speaking in the House of Representatives meeting on Tuesday, the opposition lawmaker claimed the government could have everything it would need–majority support in Parliament, budget, staff, security personnel, and party supporters, and support from the opposition parties–to control the outbreak in Nepal. However, it could not do anything as it did not have any desire for that, she added.

“If you had tested people at border points on time, the number of infected people would not have increased. If the quarantine facilities were well-managed, people would not have died today.”

Shahi said even after knowing that the cases would increase up to 40,000 in the next couple of months, the government was not doing anything to prevent the further outbreak.
