Inspection team fails to reach landslide site in Humla due to high altitude, returns from Limi

Kathmandu, May 19

An inspection team dispatched to Tilgaun in Namkha Rural Municipality-6, Humla, returned without reaching the disaster site due to high altitude complications.

The team, which included DSP Shankar Pokharel from the Nepal Police and DSP Devaraj Rai from the Armed Police Force, had set out on Sunday from the District Police Office following reports of a destructive landslide triggered by the outburst of two glacial lakes. However, the team was forced to turn back from Limi before reaching Tilgaun.

Inspector and spokesperson for the Humla District Police Office, Jung Bahadur Singh, confirmed to Onlinekhabar that the team had initially planned to inspect the landslide-hit area and establish a security post in Limi. However, due to challenges posed by high altitude, they aborted the mission to Tilgaun and are returning to the district headquarters on Monday.

“Our team couldn’t continue further due to high-altitude difficulties. After establishing a post in Limi, they’re now returning,” said Inspector Singh. According to him, it takes approximately seven hours on foot from Limi to reach Tilgaun.

Tilgaun has been at high risk since the night of May 14 (Jestha 1), when two glacial lakes burst, triggering a devastating flood and landslide laden with debris.

Currently, 32 residents from 18 households have been relocated to nearby school grounds and open fields under tarpaulin shelters. While no human casualties have been reported, authorities say the settlement remains at risk and significant property damage has occurred.
