India again encroaches upon no man’s land, builds road, canal

Mahottari, January 29

In yet another instance of border encroachment, India has built a permanent road and a canal at no-man’s-land adjoining Matihani VDC and India’s Madhavapur town.

According to Mahottari district administration office, India has built these structures by encroaching upon 7.31 metre of land close to Matihani VDC-8. After getting information about India’s plan to construct these structures, the Armed Police Force’s Matihani Basecamp had tried to stop the construction work for three weeks. But India trampled on all prevailing practices and understanding, and constructed a road and a canal at no-man’s-land, APF superintendent of police Prakash Shrestha informed. Chief district officer Birendra Yadav said: There’s an international practice which bars countries from building physical structure within 30 metres from the no-man’s land on either side. The Indian side has built permanent structures by violating this practice.
