Independent probe needed in security press scam: Mahat

Nepali Congress leader Prakash Sharan Mahat speaks at a press meet in Birgunj, on Friday, February 21, 2020.

Parsa, February 21

Nepali Congress joint general secretary Prakash Sharan Mahat has suspected that other persons besides the former minister for communications and information technology Gokul Baskota might have been involved in irregularities concerning the establishment of a security printing press. He demands that the government launch an independent probe into the case.

Mahat’s comment comes one day after Baskota resigned from his position owing to a leaked-out audiotape in which he allegedly negotiated with a Swiss company agent for a commission.

Speaking with journalists in Birgunj of Parsa district on Friday, Mahat said, “Other characters should be investigated and truth should come out.” He also demanded that Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli speak about Baskota’s alleged involvement in corruption in the next House meeting.

In another context, the opposition leader criticised the Nepal Police claiming its personnel contained some recent protests of the party’s sister organisations by using excessive force.
