Implementation of Nepal’s constitution impossible if parties do not come together, says Speaker Onsari Gharti

Kathmandu, June 30

Speaker Onsari Gharti has called Nepal’s political parties to come together for the implementation of the new constitution.

She said holding local, provincial and federal parliamentary elections will be impossible unless the parties stand united.

She said this while addressing a programme that Former Lawmakers’ Forum had organised in Kathmandu on Thursday to observe the 58th Parliament Day. Speaker Gharti warned that implementing the constitution will be impossible if the parties remain divided. For implementing the constitution, the parties should show the kind of unity they showed while promulgating the charter, she said. Constitution implementation is a matter of common interest, Gharti said, adding that understanding among parties is a must for the same.

At the programme, former Speaker Tara Nath Ranabhat said the system of proportionate representation in the Parliament has harmed the country. This system enables political leaders to make individuals of their choice lawmakers, he noted, adding: This system will make the parliamentary system corrupt.

A two-day general convention of the forum has constituted a 42-member working committee under Omkar Shrestha.

Ranabhat, outgoing chair of the forum, handed over the position to Shrestha.
