ICC T20 World Cup Asia Qualifier: Malla impresses as Nepal beat Malaysia

Kathmandu, July 24

Nepal have beaten Malaysia by seven wickets in a rain-affected match in the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup Asia Qualifier in Singapore.

Nepal winning the toss asked Malaysia to bat first in the match which was shortened to nine over per side due to rain.

Nepal were off to a flyer after Sompal Kami took two wickets in the first over sending both openers to the pavilion. Batting at number three Syed Aziz tried to stabilise the innings with this powerful hitting but once he got out to Sandeep Lamichhane Malaysia’s inning crumble as they only made 83 in the allotted nine overs. Basanta Regmi was once again good with the ball picking up two wickets. Karan KC took one wicket.

In reply, Nepal looked to be in control from the first over. Stand-in captain and opener Gyanendra Malla impressed with his shot-making scoring a half-century in just 21 balls. He and opener Pradeep Airee put up 66 runs for the opening wicket. The opening stand gave Nepal a good base to complete the chase with an over to spare.

With this Nepal have registered their first points of the tournament. To have any chance of qualifying for the Global Qualifiers, Nepal will have to win both its remaining matches against Kuwait on Saturday and Singapore on Sunday.
