Kathmandu, July 28

Whereas the government is often criticised by imposing excessive taxes on various goods and services, the top bureaucrat of the Ministry of Home Affairs has proposed introducing a new tax type on security.

Home Secretary Prem Kumar Rai says private enterprises and projects can be made obliged to pay the security tax.

Speaking with lawmakers during a meeting of the State Affairs Committee on Sunday, Rai said the government could collect the security tax from industrialists as it has been providing security to them. He was of the view that the private sector was earning profit because the government provided security to them.

“Various hydro projects are seeking security support from us. But when they make profit, they don’t give it to us,” he said, “Therefore, we can settle it at the policy level with a provision of security tax.”
