Kathmandu, April 22
After deciding to proceed with the Grade 12 exams from April 24, the National Examination Board (NEB) has announced it will make a final appeal to teachers to return to schools by Tuesday evening.
Tuesday’s meeting of the board confirmed that exams would go ahead even if teachers continued to boycott, prompting frustration among educators. In response, the NEB said a final decision and official appeal would be made later in the day.
“Conducting exams is a sensitive matter. With the education minister having resigned, we now need further consultation with the government,” NEB Chairperson Mahashram Sharma told Onlinekhabar. “We had initially decided to request teachers to cooperate, but due to the minister’s resignation, further discussion is needed. A final appeal with a decision will be issued by this evening.”
The Federation of Teachers had earlier declared that even if the exams are conducted through alternative mechanisms, they will not participate in marking the answer sheets. This has led the board to prepare another appeal.
With just two days remaining until the scheduled exams, students and parents are left uncertain about whether the exams will proceed. According to the board, over 511,000 students are set to appear for the Grade 12 examinations.
