Kathmandu, August 8

The government has decided to form a new authority to manage public transport in Kathmandu Valley.

The transport ministry has registered a bill in Parliament to form the KathmandU Valley Public Transport Management Authority to pave the way for the government entity.

The authority will develop an integrated transport plan for the valley, formulate both long and short-term strategies and implement an electronic payment system, says the bill under consideration in Parliament.

According to the draft bill, the authority will also take the lead to form the Kathmandu Valley Public Transport Council, which will be headed by the Mayor of Kathmandu along with the Mayor of Lalitpur as his/her deputy. The draft says that the CEO of the new body will be chosen through open competition. The authority’s staffing will be decided by the Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport.
The authority is being formed amid complaints that commuting in Kathmandu has become increasingly difficult and traffic police alone cannot manage everything.
