Govt orders mountain rescuers to inform in advance

Kathmandu, September 25

In its bid to curb fake rescues, the Department of Tourism has made it mandatory for agencies to contact them before initiating a rescue mission on the mountains.

According to the Search and Rescue Work Plan 2075, the department has made it mandatory for agencies to inform the department before initiating the rescue.

The department clarifies that the rule was introduced one year ago, but it has not been effectively implemented so far.

The rule asks the rescuers to inform the department before rescuing mountaineers, climbing guides, porters, trekkers and trekking guides. The department’s hotel and mountaineering section has said anyone not following rules will be prosecuted as per the law.

The government had formed a committee to investigate fake rescues last year after international insurance companies had warned the government that they would stop issuing travel insurance policies for tourists visiting Nepal.
