Govt hospital chiefs barred from private practice

File: Ministry of Health

Kathmandu, July 28

The government has barred chiefs of government-run hospitals from private practice.

Till now, they were allowed to work privately after acquiring approval from the Ministry of Health. However, the provision has been scrapped now.

Other doctors working at government hospitals, except the hospital chiefs, still can get engaged in private practice, but they cannot identify themselves as government doctors while working elsewhere.

Sources in the ministry say the decision is made as the first step to implement the government announcement of ‘one doctor: one health institution’ included in the budget statement for this year. Once the policy is implemented fully, other government doctors will also barred from private practice.

The ministry has already issued a circular to all government hospitals across the country to implement the decision made by Minister Bhanu Bhakta Dhakal last Friday.
