Govt dismisses civil servants’ call to amend transfer rules

Kathmandu, December 20

The government has dismissed agitation by a group of civil servants demanding that the government reconsider its decision related to the transfer of federal bureacrats to the provinces.

Minister for Communication Gokul Baskota, who was addressing a regular press briefing in Kathmandu, said that the new ordinance related to the management of civil servants was in accordance with the constitution. “Any agitation is meaningless,” said the minister, a day after a group of civil servants picketed the Prime Minister’s Office in Singha Durbar.

Baskota said that of the 92,000 government employees currently working in Kathmandu, 44,000 will be sent to the provinces and the municipalities and rural municipalities.

“Article 302 of the constitution states that civil services will be set up in the local as well as provincial levels,” he said adding that the constitution gives the government power to transfer any employee to any station.
