Gautam Buddha International Airport: Chinese contractor gets two-month ultimatum to improve performance

Construction work is underway at Gautam Buddha International Airport in Bhairahawa.

Bhairahawa, August 6

The management team of under-construction Gautam Buddha International Airport in Bhairahawa of Rupandehi has issued a two-month ultimatum to the Chinese construction company, Northwest Civil Aviation Company, to improve performance.

The management has warned of terminating the contract upon failure to heed the ultimatum.

The Project Chief Om Sharma tells Onlinekhabar that the final warning has been issued after the company repeatedly failed to meet expectations.

Sharma says the management is prepared to issue another call for tenders in case the contract is terminated.

The Chinese company was told to complete six per cent of total construction works every month, but it has not been able to do even one per cent work every month.

Currently, construction of runway and terminal building is underway.

The government has set a deadline of July 2018 to promote the existing domestic airport to the status of an international airport.

But so far, only 30 per cent works have been over, according to Sharma.

The Asian Development Bank has provided a loan assistance for the project.
