Gandaki Province Chief Minister says no to Kali Gandaki diversion

Prithvi Subba Gurung

Kathmandu, April 21

Gandaki Province Chief Minister Prithvi Subba Gurung says his government will not allow the proposed Kali Gandaki diversion project to go on.

Addressing the provincial assembly on Sunday, Gurung told lawmakers that the government’s plan to divert water from the river to the Tinau cannot be implemented.

According to the government’s plan, water from the Kali Gandaki is to be diverted to the Tinau river through a tunnel, which is to be built on the border between Palpa and Syanja districts. The water will then be used to irrigate land in Rupandehi and Kapilvastu.

Kali Gandaki is not the sole property of Provnice 5, said CM Gurung.

“The project cannot move ahead without an agreement between the two provinces on the fate of the Kali Gandaki,” said the CM. “I have already talked to the Prime Minister, the project cannot go on.”

CM Gurung also said that the proposed project will have environmental consequences for Chitwan as well.
