Nepali Congress President Gagan Thapa has urged those who are able to help to come forward and support the victims of the Rasuwa floods.
In a video message posted on Facebook on Thursday, he also appealed to people not to use harsh words if they are unable to provide assistance. “I have one request: Those who can help should come forward and help. Even if we cannot help, let us at least not speak harshly,” he said in the video.
Thapa shared his observations from his visit to the flood-affected areas, describing the scale of the disaster, ongoing search, rescue and relief efforts, and the grievances raised by those affected. A few days earlier, he had visited several flood-hit areas in Dhading and Nuwakot for an on-site assessment.
“This is such a massive calamity, such a devastating disaster. It has destroyed so many homes and affected so many families and people. Only after going to the ground do you truly understand the scale of it,” Thapa said. “You simply cannot assess it from outside or comprehend what has happened there. Its scale is beyond measure.”
Thapa said everyone must work together during this time of disaster. “At this time, each and every one of us must work together,” he said. He also said the party would prepare and make public a detailed report based on what its representatives observed during their field visits, including recommendations on what the government should do and the steps to be taken in the next phase.
“Based on everything we saw on the ground, we will prepare and make public a detailed report on what the government needs to do and what we need to do in the next phase,” he said. Thapa also praised the work being carried out by local and provincial governments in the flood-affected areas.
