Almost all newspapers published in Kathmandu on Friday have given priority to reports on Nepal’s historic achievement in international cricket. Similarly, the Chief Justice’s resignation has also received the attention of the editors. Here’s a summary of the main stories that made it to to the press today:

Nepal to get ODI status after World Cup Qualifiers

Republica says Nepal has been awarded ODI status for four years. All Nepali players will be making their debuts when they play against another team with ODI status. The team will also get an opportunity to participate in the ICC Intercontinental Cup, the highest form of cricket outside of the Test-playing world. Similarly, Nepal can officially arrange tours to and from other countries such as the UAE and the Netherlands. Nepal can also host ODI matches at home after upgrading the cricket ground at home to meet international standards.

Parajuli resigns, Joshee steps in

Nagarik says the exit of Chief Justice Gopal Prasad Parajuli will be known in history as the first time that a sitting Chief Justice has been forcibly removed from his post. The paper says that Parajuli was relieved from his duty after the Judicial Council sent him a letter saying that he ought to have retired in July last year. The paper says that the Chief Justice had to resign as he did not heed suggestions from his aides to go on leave. Attorney General Agni Kharel had also advised Prajuli to go on leave.

Meanwhile, Kantipur reports that Chief Justice Gopal Prasad Parajuli might face corruption charges. The paper says that Parajuli could face legal action for working seven months and nine days past his retirement.

Deuba to lead shadow Cabinet

Former Prime Minister and Nepali Congress leader Sher Bahadur Deuba will lead a shadow Cabinet to keep an eye on the functioning of the new government, Rajdhani reports. According to the report, the Nepali Congress will also name members of the shadow Cabinet. Shadow Ministers will be named to monitor the activities of each ministry.

Former President to get life-long security

 

Annapurna Post reports that the Home Ministry is working on a new security guideline for VIPs. The paper says that if the draft becomes law, the government will have to arrange security arrangement for former presidents until the day they are alive. The paper says that however, the government will arrange security for former VPs only for five years after they retire.

Docs puncture patient’s intestine during laparoscopy

Annapurna Post reports that a woman was found to have a punctured intestine after undergoing a laparoscopy surgery in Rajbiraj. The report says Anu Kumari Yadav (28) recently underwent a laparoscopy surgery at the Gajendra Narayan Singh Hospital in Rajbiraj. Even days after the surgery, she would vomit and her stomach was bloated. Later, when she was taken the BP Koirala Hospital in Dharan, her small intestine was found to have been punctured during the surgery. Doctors attending Yadav say she is now safe.
