Kathmandu, September 15
The Embassy of France in Nepal has handed over emergency humanitarian supplies to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) to support relief and recovery efforts following the devastating floods of August 26.
The French government mobilised assistance to support Nepal’s emergency response mechanisms and communities severely affected by the floods.
The relief consignment includes floor mats, hygiene kits, kitchen kits, water purification tablets, solar lamps and urgent and general medicine kits.
The supplies were provided in response to requests from the Government of Nepal through the European Union’s Civil Protection Mechanism.
French Ambassador-designate Françoise Puig-Inza handed over the relief materials to Minister for Science, Technology and Innovation Mahabir Pun.
Speaking on the occasion, Puig-Inza said France stood in solidarity with the people and government of Nepal following the disaster.
“In the wake of this tragic disaster, France stands in solidarity with the people and Government of Nepal,” she said.
She added that the emergency assistance, along with further support planned by France, reflected the commitment of France and the European Union to supporting local authorities in their immediate relief efforts and helping vulnerable communities recover and rebuild.
In addition to the in-kind assistance, the French government will contribute to international relief efforts for people affected by the floods through UN agencies, the International Federation of the Red Cross and French international NGOs Action Contre la Faim and Triangle Génération Humanitaire.
The organisations are already deployed in affected areas and are supporting humanitarian operations on the ground.
The French Embassy also expressed its condolences to the families affected by the disaster and to the Government of Nepal.
