Former Chief Justice Cholendra Shumsher Rana has been handed over to his family.
SP Rameshwar Karki of the Crime Investigation Office said Rana, who was taken from his residence at midnight on Saturday, was handed over to his family a short while ago.
SSP Santosh Khadka of the Crime Investigation Office had earlier said that Rana had been sent to a “safe place”. However, he did not disclose where the “safe place” was.
A team from the Crime Investigation Office took Rana from his residence in Maharajgunj last night.
A team from the National Human Rights Commission that reached the office to meet Rana was also not allowed to meet him by the police. The commission team returned after waiting at the gate for around 45 minutes without being allowed to meet him.
The government has not disclosed the reason for taking Rana into custody.
SSP Khadka told Onlinekhabar that Rana had to be brought to the office overnight because of a “security threat”.
After a team from the Crime Investigation Office in Teku arrived at his residence last night, Rana called his brother, Prabhu Shumsher, and informed him about the situation.
Speaking to Onlinekhabar on Sunday morning, Prabhu Shumsher said, “The police told my brother that there was a threat to him from Gen Z and took him away.”
Legal experts, however, have questioned the manner in which the police handled the matter.
