The umbrella organisation of Nepali journalists, Federation of Nepali Journalists, has begun a weeklong protest programme against the Media Council Bill that the government has recently registered in Parliament.

The FNJ has been claiming that the bill, if endorsed as it is, will be adverse to the free press.

On the first day of the protest, the Federation will consult stakeholders and experts about key provisions of the bill. The event has been scheduled to take place in Kathmandu this afternoon, according to the organisation’s vice president Dilip Thapa Magar.

Former officials of the FNJ  and editors of key media houses of the country have also been invited to the event.

Claiming that the new law will convert the autonomous Press Council into a government department, the Federation has demanded that the government withdraw the bill and register a new one.
