Floods and landslides disrupt roads and power supply in Kavrepalanchok

Kavrepalanchok, October 7

Continuous rainfall on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday has triggered floods and landslides, disrupting roads and electricity supply in four rural municipalities of the district.

According to local authorities, communication services in several rural areas have also been affected due to power outages, and it will take several days to fully resume transportation. Roads connecting Khanikhola, Mahabharat, Roshi, and Bethanchok rural municipalities have been blocked by landslides, though some clearance work began on Monday.

The main road leading across the remote Mahabharat mountain range has been completely blocked. Local representatives estimate it may take about a week to reopen the road, especially those leading to Khani Khola and Mahabharat rural municipalities.

Mahabharat Rural Municipality Chairperson Kanchhalal Jimba said, “The area is completely cut off from road, electricity, and communication networks, and there is no alternative route to reach Mahabharat.” Similarly, Khanikhola Rural Municipality Chairperson Indra Bahadur Thing stated that all connecting roads are blocked, but efforts are underway to reopen them using heavy machinery.

In Roshi Rural Municipality, roads to several wards were washed away after temporary diversions along the BP Highway collapsed due to the flooding Roshi River. Roshi Rural Municipality Chairperson Dinesh Lama said the centre will only be reconnected to the road network after repairing damaged sections at Chaukidanda and Ghumaune. He added that while electricity services are partially restored, efforts are ongoing to fully resume supply.

In Bethanchok, local representatives have prioritised reopening the main roads. Chairperson Bhagwan Adhikari said machinery has been deployed to clear routes connecting other wards from the rural municipality office. Two people have died in the district due to floods and landslides, which also caused significant damage to infrastructure and private property.
