Finance Minister urges microfinance companies to concentrate in rural areas

Yubaraj Khatiwada

Kathmandu, August 13

Minister for Finance Yubaraj Khatiwada says microfinance companies should concentrate their activities in rural areas than the urban ones.

“You have to go to the rural areas where communities are in your need. You also have to coordinate with local governments for that,” Khatiwada told microfinance company operators, speaking at a function in Kathmandu today, “You have to tell local governments to lead you to such places where the level of poverty is intense, where people are suffering from deprivation.”

The Minister was of the view that microfinance companies should fill the gap where banks and financial institutions have not reached yet.

After that, the priority of such companies should be connecting locals with productivity, according to him. Khatiwada suggested the companies’ interest rate should also be reasonable for the communities they serve.

In another context, he assured that the government would fully support the companies in dealing with various problems.
