Kathmandu, December 26

Upendra Yadav, coordinator of the Federal Alliance and chair of Federal Socialist Forum Nepal, warned on Wednesday that they will not stand quiet if the government tries to conduct elections without amending the Constitution.

Yadav claimed that Constitution amendment is the only way to end the current political standoff.

Constitution amendment is the only way to end the current political standoff.

Speaking at a face-to-face that Reporters’ Club Nepal had organised, he said: Morcha (Madheshi Morcha, a partner in the FA), will reject elections conducted using force. At one time, then King Gyanendra had also tried to conduct elections that way. Everybody knows what happened.

He argued: The problem lies in politics, what’s the use of talking about elections.

Congress and communists are strange. The present Constitution has envisaged elections for local levels. But these parties are talking about holding local polls. Which Charter will they follow while conducting elections?

At present, Congress and UML are pursuing a plot to finish off achievements like republicanism and federalism, he alleged.

Achievements of the movement (Jana Andolan II) are in jeopardy because of the Congress, he said, adding: Congress leaders speak in favour of Constitution amendment, but mobilise party cadres in the districts against amendment. This is unacceptable.

Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba joined hands with the King once, split the Congress party and put multiparty democracy in jeopardy, Yadav pointed, adding: There’s a fear that he may play a similar role again.

He further accused the Congress and communists of coming together and trying to push the country towards regression.
