Is Federal Alliance on the same page over Charter amendment process? Two leaders send feelers that it’s a divided house

Kathmandu, November 15

A day after the Federal Alliance gave Prime Minister Prachanda 15 days more to register a Constitution amendment proposal in the Parliament, another leader from the Madheshi Morcha (UDMF), which is part of the alliance, called on Prachanda at his official residence, asked him to move the amendment process without delay and said they were not happy with Upendra’s proposal.

According to a source, UDMF leaders are in constant contact with PM. A few days before the FA submitted its memorandum, UDMF leaders Mahantha Thakur, Rajendra Mahato and Mahendra Raya Yadav had met PM.

Notably, Upendra is FA coordinator and he has demanded that the government should register the amendment proposal only after reaching an understanding with FA.

While Upendra on Monday gave PM 15 more days to register the amendment proposal, UDMF had been pressing the government to register such a proposla within Kartik-end (mid-November). Understandably, Upendra’s action has not gone well with other UDMF leaders.

Meanwhile, the source said UDMF leaders have advised PM to register the amendment proposal without delay.

A UDMF leader said: We have told PM to register the amendment proposal without delay. We have not said there should be an understanding in advance.

Mahendra Yadav, president of Tarai-Madhesh Sadbhavana Party, admitted meeting PM Prachanda. We have submitted a 26-point memorandum to PM, he said, adding that they asked PM to register the amendment proposal by incorporating those demands.
