During the last five years, around 73,000 fake driver’s licences have been issued from transport offices across the country. There are 35 transport offices under the provincial government.

About 23,000 licences that were about to be issued were stopped after the Department of Transport Management received a complaint about the issuance of licences.

After the complaint, the department formed a committee and found that all the details of 73,000 people had been altered and kept under a different name, the director general of the department Uddhav Prasad Rijal said.

“The Department of Transport Management has given the master user ID and password to the heads of 35 transport offices across the country, which is also given to their subordinates,” he said. “It was found that those who got the user ID and password misused them to distribute fake driver’s licences.”

The report sent by the department to the Ministry of Physical Infrastructure has also reached the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA). After receiving the report, the authority instructed the ministry to study and send the report.

Following the incident, the department has implemented measures to ensure that no changes to names or any other details can be made on the license database.
