Election Commission concerned over demonstrations for provincial capitals

Kathmandu, January 19

The Election Commission says it is concerned over protests carried out in different parts of the country, Dang of Province 5 and Doti of Province 7 in particular, over the government’s recent decision to fix temporary provincial capitals.

In its statement issued today, the constitutional body says the protests might affect preparations for the National Assembly elections as the date of January 24 has been fixed for filing nominations for the elections.

The elections are scheduled for February 7.

Earlier, speaking at a function in Kathmandu yesterday, Chief Election Commissioner Ayodhee Prasad Yadav said the demonstrations could affect the election calendar.

Meanwhile, the Commission has also urged the government, political parties, recently elected members of the House of Representatives and provincial assemblies and other stakeholders to make poll-conducive environment.
