The government is preparing to extend the validity of a driving licence to 10 years from the existing five years.

Physical Infrastructure and Transport Minister Prakash Jwala told the House of Representatives on Tuesday that the government was preparing to amend a law to make the change.

He said the existing provision of the five-year validity has been found too short that made the citizens visit the transport office every five years.

The minister said he hoped the extension would also decrease the pressure of the backlog of smart licences yet to be printed.
