Doti: Protesters burn PM’s effigy over provincial capital decision

Doti, January 18

Police in Doti lobbed rounds of tear gas shells to contain a demonstration demanding that Dipayal of the district be made temporary provincial capital.

After the demonstrators burned the effigy of Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba, police intervened in the situation, triggering a clash. They also baton-charged the demonstrators.

The locals had resorted to the protest today after the government yesterday named Dhangadhi of Kailali as the temporary capital of Province 7.

Police claim they resorted to retaliation as the protesters tried to set the Regional Administration Office ablaze.

“We used minor force to disperse the mob after they pelted stones at the Office,” SP Madhu Sudan Luintel tells Onlinekhabar.
