The government remains committed to democracy and no one should question it, says Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli.
Oli, who returned to Kathmandu last week after receiving treatment in Singapore, said that the people gave his party the mandate to form the government believing in its programmes and policies. “I am not saying this in the heat of the moment, but there have been attempts to spread lies about the government’s commitment to democracy,” said Oli addressing Parliament on Sunday.
“I have sacrificed so much for democracy, how can you say that the government is not democratic,” said Oli. “No one should try to spread disappointment among the people,” he added.
Oli also warned those wishing for his departure. “There are people who have been saying that the Prime Minister is about to lose his job, he’s shivering,” he said adding, that he was not going to quit anytime soon. “Please wait till the next election, even I don’t want to continue,” said Oli.
The PM also warned people no to take this government’s generosity as its weakness. “We’ve noticed that people are taking our generosity for our weakness. We welcome questions and peaceful protests however if anyone breaks the rules while criticising the government they will be punished,” he said.
He also said that he believed that monarchy could not make a comeback which was why the government had remained silent. “We fought against monarchy while it was powerful. It can never make a comeback now. However, if need be, the government will rise to protect democracy,” he warned.
