Discovering Chhyadi Ghyang, the village above the clouds

Discovering Chhyadi Ghyang, the village above the clouds
Chhyadi Ghang

To visit Chhyadi Ghyang, Helambu’s emerging tourist destination, we set out from Boudha in Kathmandu, heading towards Helambu via Melamchi. This was not merely a journey; it was a search for nature’s unparalleled beauty and tranquillity.

After arriving at Ghopteghyang in Helambu Rural Municipality, we filled our stomachs with delicious local food and then began our trek along the Helambu Himalayan Great Trail. Parts of the trail had already been constructed, making the journey considerably easier.

After some time, the path climbed upward into the forest. This area, which falls within Langtang National Park, is blanketed in dense forest. Along the way, colourful flowers of various species greeted us. Different varieties of rhododendron were also visible. Although most of the rhododendrons had already bloomed and fallen at this time of year, a few white rhododendron blossoms remained, making the trail even more enchanting.

The sight of bees buzzing around the flowers and collecting honey was utterly captivating. The chirping of various bird species filled the forest with life. The peaceful surroundings, the music of the birds, and the lush green jungle worked like medicine against fatigue. A wave of joy stirred within us.

After approximately seven hours of trekking, we reached Tharepati. Good hotels are available in Tharepati for overnight stays. From there, one can also travel to the famous Gosainkunda. After a further roughly two-hour journey from Tharepati, we arrived at Chhyadi Ghyang.

Situated at an altitude of 4,200 metres above sea level, Chhyadi Ghyang is Helambu’s new tourist destination. Helambu Rural Municipality organised a landmark executive meeting here, with the primary goals of promoting domestic tourism, preserving glaciers, and mitigating climate change. The meeting, held on June 7 at the base of Chhyadi Ghyang, aimed to establish this area as a new hub for tourism development.

Chhyadi Ghyang’s natural beauty, Himalayan vistas, dense forests, and serene atmosphere make it an ideal destination for trekkers. With glaciers nearby, this area is also excellent for studying the impacts of climate change.

This journey made one thing clear to us; Helambu still has many beautiful destinations that, if developed properly, can boost both domestic and international tourism.

We are fully convinced that places like Chhyadi Ghyang have the potential to take Nepal’s tourism to new heights.
